- How is Citizenpip® different from other waste-free lunch systems?
- Citizenpip® lunch gear is designed to be fun, stylish, and easy to use for kids, while offering maximum convenience and flexibility for parents. While Citizenpip® gives you the convenience of coordinated lunch kit components, it also works with other types of food containers and food items. Go ahead - throw in that banana or orange! Wide mouth designs and dishwasher-safe materials make Citizenpip® products easy to clean. Citizenpip® is also the only line of reusable lunch gear to include everything you need to pack a waste-free lunch, including reusable napkins and flatware.
- What are muck-free materials?
- Muck-free is a highly non-scientific, but short way for Citizenpip® to say "lead-free, BPA-free, PVC-free, and phthalate-free". Muck-free materials are food-safe and do not contain hazardous or toxic materials that can leach into food and drink. Lead, BPA, PVC, and phthalates are substances that are known to be harmful. We have purposefully selected products that are free of these substances. The stainless steel products are made from food grade 304 stainless steel. Plastic materials are made from polypropylene (#5 plastic) which is BPA-free and has no known hazards. The lunch bag is lead-free, PVC-free, and phthalate free. All products have been lab tested by a CPSIA accredited testing laboratory to meet FDA requirements and CPSIA standards.
- What is CPSIA?
- The Consumer Public Safety Information Act (CPSIA) was signed into law in August 2008. The law expands the role of the U.S. Consumer Public Safety Commission (CPSC) and institutes new testing and documentation requirements. The law increases the restrictions on acceptable levels of lead and phthalates, particularly in children's products. Citizenpip® exceeds CPSIA standards as all products are lead-free and phthalate-free.
- What are FDA standards?
- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is responsible for ensuring safety of all food packaging and food contact substances. Through the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN), the FDA regulates food contact materials to ensure they are safe for intended use.
- Where are the products made?
- The lunch bag and fork + spoon set are made in Taiwan, and all other products are made in China. Our company has visited each of our manufacturer's facilities and can confirm that the products are responsibly made in a safe working environment.
- Are any of the products recyclable?
- Yes, stainless steel and polypropylene products are recyclable. Even the lunch bag is recyclable!
- Why does Citizenpip® use plastic instead of stainless steel food containers?
- Our airtight food containers are made out of polypropylene, which is BPA-free and does not leach into foods. Also, most leaching concerns are with liquids and wet foods. We have used stainless steel for the water bottle and insulated food jar, but have chosen to use polypropylene plastic for the food containers as it is food-safe, lightweight, durable, dishwasher safe, and easy for kids to use.
- Can the airtight food containers be used in the microwave?
- The polypropylene containers are FDA approved for microwave use. However, we do not recommend heating any plastics in the microwave.
- Can I fill the airtight containers with liquids?
- Yes, the airtight containers have a silicone seal and are completely airtight and leakproof. You could even fill it with water and it won't leak.
- Do the lunch kits come with an ice pack? How do I keep the food cold?
- The lunch kits do not come with a separate ice pack. However, the stainless steel water bottle features a wide mouth so that you can fill it with ice cubes. This iced beverage will help keep the food cold within the insulated lunch bag. We do not recommend putting the stainless steel water bottle in the freezer.
- How wide is the mouth of the water bottle?
- The water bottle opening measures 1.9" in diameter. It's wide enough to fit ice cubes, and you can easily clean the inside of the bottle.
- Can I use the water bottle for hot drinks?
- We do not recommend using the water bottle for hot liquids as it is single wall stainless steel, so the bottle will feel very hot to the touch if the contents are hot. But for this same reason, the water bottle filled with ice water works well to help keep the contents of the lunch bag cold.
- Can I wash everything in the dishwasher?
- The fork, spoon, and airtight containers are dishwasher safe. We recommend washing the water bottle and insulated food jar by hand, as they are not dishwasher safe. The cotton napkins are machine washable and dryer safe.
- What exactly fits into the lunch bag?
- Everything in the Starter Meal kit can fit into the lunch bag, which includes a water bottle, a sandwich size container, three side containers, and one of the five napkins. On days that you are not packing a sandwich, you can switch out the square sandwich container for the insulated food jar. The lunch bag is meant to be flexible enough to fit other containers you might have as well. View photos of how products fit in the lunch bags.
